Specialist Notes
Original edition, of considerable rarity and importance: in the present Rhymes and Prose of Della Casa the famous Galateo appears in the first edition. It begins on page 82 with the title: `` Treatise by Messer Giovanni della Casa, in which under the person of an old idiot teaching a young man of his, he discusses ways, which must either be held, or disgusted in the common conversation, surname Galatheo overo de Costumes ''. Written with an elegant language, it is not only a treatise on good manners but a compendium of moral and practical teachings dictated by a long experience and a refined culture and remains a significant product of Humanism. It got this name because it was suggested to the author by Galeazzo (Galateo) Florimonte bishop of Sessa. Imprinted with the same characters and initials used by Paolo Manuzio for the Venetian Academy; it is quoted by Renouard, who counts it among the works of the Aldine typography ('' bien exécuté et peu commun ''). It was reprinted on its own in 1559.
