Rome, Amidei 1731. In 4 °. Frontispiece printed in red and black with the coat of arms of the dedicatee Marquis Livio de Carolis, with 12 etching portraits engraved by O. Leoni, elegant headbands and ornate initials including two headbands with medals depicting Bernini and Maratti engraved by M. Tuscher, small tear on the inner edge of the title page, few light blooms, coeval leather binding, friezes phytomorphs in gold on the back, abrasions on the plates, small lacks on the back caps and hinges. Ex libris of the Musem Britanicum on the reverse of the title page and of the last card, paper ex libris by Hon. Bathurst on the counterplate.


Specialist Notes

First edition of this important source for the history of art, much appreciated for the splendid portraits of contemporary painters engraved in copper by Lioni between 1621 and 1625 and published under the care of Fausto Amidei. Lioni was one of the first engravers to specialize in portraiture and used to make his engravings starting from pastel drawings. Cicognara, 2304.
