London, Sampson Low, son and Marston, 1868, 2 vols. With 160 chromolithographs protected by tissue, light scattered blooms, reinforcements to the backing paper, handwritten annotations on the back plate, green shagreen binding with gold frame on the plates, back with floral decorations, title, author and tome number printed in gold within red gusset, internal serrations and golden cuts, slight defects in the cap and corners.
Specialist Notes
Second edition, published with the plates in color and in a smaller format than the first. Lexden Park in Colchester, but also because the plants are cataloged according to the classification recently introduced by Augustin-Pyrame de Candolle. This system differed profoundly from that of Linnaeus which was based on the reproductive systems of plants, while taking into consideration many other characteristics. Elizabeth Twining (1805 - 1889), daughter of Richard, a famous tea merchant, was a botanist and philanthropist.
