Il livello è uno strumento a cannocchiale orizzontale con il quale si realizza una linea di mira orizzontale che serve a misurare i dislivelli grazie alla tecnica della livellazione geometrica. Cooke, Troughton & Simms è stata un'azienda britannica di strumenti di precisione fondata a York nel 1922 dalla fusione di due storiche società, la Troughton & Simms e la T. Cooke & Sons. Quest'ultima fu creata nel 1837 da Thomas Cooke, un ingegnere ottico autodidatta di grande abilità che ha contribuito ad innovare il campo della misurazione di precisione.
