Il cubano Arnaldo Tamayo Mendez fu il primo pilota latinoamericano della storia nello spazio. Insieme con il russo Yuri Romanenko portò a termine con successo la missione Soyuz 38 raggiungendo la stazione orbitale Saliut 6, eseguendo numerosi esperimenti nell'ambito della medicina, biologia e fisica.
