Specialist Notes

The diorama, one of the most fascinating precursors of cinema, represents a fundamental stage in the evolution of the visual arts and representational techniques. Designed to create illusions of reality through static images animated by light, the diorama combines art and technical ingenuity, anticipating the immersive experience that cinema would perfect. The diorama subjects are as follows: Napoleon's Visit to Malmaison; the Battle of Waterloo; Napoleon in Alexandria; Landing of the Soldiers; Portrait Presented to Napoleon; Meeting between Napoleon and the Emperor of Austria; Napoleon in Rome before Castel Sant'Angelo; The French Army at the River; Combat in the Tyrolean Mountains; Napoleon before the Attack; The Pope in Piazza del Popolo in a Carriage; Napoleon on Horseback.
