Specialist Notes
A splendid illustrated sixteenth-century edition of Vitruvius's De Architectura, edited by the French architect and humanist Guillaume Philandrier, a student of Serlio and a leading figure of the Renaissance. The work, enriched with corrections and annotations based on manuscript sources, also includes texts by Agricola, Cusa, and Frontinus. Considered a milestone in sixteenth-century architectural theory, it profoundly influenced scholars and translators until the nineteenth century. Vitruvius's treatise, the only comprehensive architectural manual surviving from antiquity, inspired masters such as Alberti, Bramante, Michelangelo, Palladio, and Vignola, becoming a normative reference for Western architectural art and construction science.
