Specialist Notes

Luis de León (Belmonte, 1527 – Madrigal de las Altas Torres, August 23, 1591) was a Spanish poet, translator, and theologian. Having become a friar, he is one of the most important writers of the second phase of the Spanish Renaissance, along with Saint John of the Cross, and is part of the ascetic literature of the second half of the century. His poetry is inspired by the desire to abandon earthly aspects in order to ascend to God. Moral and ascetic themes dominate his work.
