Specialist Notes
The Philli of Skyros is a pastoral fable with a complex plot, yet one developed with considerable constructive skill around a double action: that of Celia's simultaneous and equal love for two shepherds, Nisus and Aminta, who had saved her from the snares of a centaur, both of whom were wounded, and that of the two children Philli and Tirsi, sent as hostages to the king of Thrace.
Opera II: As a composer of texts for music, Salvadori contributed to the evolution of the new style of theatrical singing. From the classical mythological repertoire, which Ottavio Rinuccini and Iacopo Corsi had drawn upon, he moved on to develop the chivalric repertoire, predominantly inspired by Ariosto, which had become popular in the operatic entertainments of various courts in central and northern Italy from the second decade of the century. Finally, he created an unprecedented sacred and hagiographic variant of the genre, a precursor to later developments. A characteristic of his work, which ranged from epic to religious, was the use of comic inserts.
