Specialist Notes
Original edition. Contains a total of 23 cantos, 6 of which are first editions: The Risorgimento, To Silvia, The Recollections, Night Song of a Wandering Shepherd in Asia, The Calm After the Storm, and Saturday in the Village. The Cantos are preceded by the beautiful dedicatory letter, "To His Friends in Tuscany," printed here for the first time, which has the air of a final testament, desperate yet consoling. This edition was published by subscription, and was preceded by a manifesto that Leopardi circulated throughout Italy. "(...) I sold the manuscript of my verses," he wrote to his father from Florence on December 23, 1830, "with 700 associations, for 80 sequins: in the current problematic state of trade, it has not been possible to obtain more..." Mazzatinti 670; Benedetucci 36.
One of the most important original editions of Leopardi's CantiContact
