The Cantos are preceded by the beautiful dedicatory letter, "To His Friends in Tuscany," printed here for the first time, which has the air of a final testament, desperate yet consoling. This edition was published by subscription, and was preceded by a manifesto that Leopardi circulated throughout Italy. "(...)
