In-4°; Period full marbled leather binding, spine with 5 raised bands with double title and gold decorations in the compartments, boards framed by gilt fillets, marbled paper endpapers, marbled edges; 3 vols.; title pages in red and black characters; 25 copperplate engravings (a portrait engraved by Saint-Aubin of De Brosses on the frontispiece to vol. 1 based on a drawing by Cochin), 9 coin plates, 9 portraits from ancient busts, 2 folded geographical maps (one depicting Numidia), reproduction of a bas-relief, a battle plan folded several times (order of marches and battles of Metellus against Jugurtha) and 2 genealogical tables (one of the Kings of Numidia and one of Caecilius Metellus), large illustrated headnotes at the beginning of the chapters, publisher's brand on the title pages. Labels glued to the front pastedowns: bookplate with coat of arms, in the name of Comte Karl de Mercy-Argenteau. A marginal copy with crisp leaves; the front hinge of the first volume is weak, the upper headband is lost and the lower one is detached on volume I, some light peeling; complete work in good overall condition.

Original edition of this critical study of the works of Sallust, with the valuable translation by De Brosses. A fine copy, complete with the "fragmenta" at the end of volume III (sometimes missing). Gaius Sallustius Crispus, or more simply Sallust (in Latin: Gaius Sallustius Crispus) (86 BC–34 BC), was a Roman historian and politician, a senator of the Roman Republic. Charles De Brosses (1709–1777), French scholar, man of letters, and first president of the Parliament of Dijon.
