Specialist Notes
Second edition, printed three years after the first (1519) and preferable to all subsequent ones, which were edited and censored in the text. This book, one of several legendary writings that arose around the figure of St. Francis and written by Bartolomeo between 1385 and 1390, owes its fame to the author's extravagant assertions to honor the holy founder of his order (St. Francis). It establishes a bold parallel between the life of Jesus and that of St. Francis. The ensuing scandal was such that it led the Franciscans to seek out and destroy the work, which soon became unobtainable.
