Specialist Notes
First edition. Sir John Rutherford Alcock (1809-1897) was an English diplomat to China and Japan from 1844 to 1869. This work offers an extraordinary insight into Japan in the mid-19th century through the eyes of the first diplomat to settle in Japan after the signing of the friendship and trade treaty of 1858 and the first westerner to climb Mount Fuji in 1860. & nbsp; & nbsp;
