Specialist Notes
Very rare original edition. La Pira states, in this work, that on 25 September 1792 in Vizzini it rained manna from heaven for about an hour and a half and that the event was repeated on the 26th and 27th at the same time, five o'clock in Spain: «Towards twenty-two and a half in Italy, which corresponds to five in Spain, he showed in that place a small whitish cloud, not very dense, which appeared motionless, approximately a third of a mile high [...] he replied for the space of a quarter from now on the same rain of the sugary substance [...] the Manna fell partly in liquor and each drop could be approximately the third part of a grape, and partly in a saline form in the form of very delicate sand". The explanation was also given by La Pira himself according to which the manna, after having dissolved in the waters of the nearby river, evaporated with it; then, due to the temperature, it crystallized and then fell back to the ground. It is no coincidence, however, that for the Greeks manna was "Secretion of the stars"; we know today, as already mentioned, what its origin is. But the manna continues to bring with it just the right touch of magic.
