Specialist Notes

Third Latin edition (the first Latin edition was in 1662; it was printed in French in 1664) of this fundamental work, the first to attempt to explain the physiology of the human body . The preface is by Claude Clerselier, a disciple of the scientist. Descartes was one of the greatest exponents of mechanical philosophy: he pioneered biological mechanism, viewing the human body as a machine driven by a rational soul, located in the pineal gland.
