Bergamo, Italian Institute of Graphic Arts, 1917. In oblong 4°, 222 x 300 mm. Elegant plates by Furino between Art Nouveau and Art Deco, splendid embossed binding with refined decorative elements, an excellent example.

Specialist Notes

An album celebrating the cultural mission of the Dante Alighieri Society (the protection of Italianness) and the national war effort. In those years, the Dante Alighieri Society played a key role in patriotic propaganda. The title, "For a Greater Italy," was the motto of irredentism, here taken as an emblem of a just and necessary war. "Only when every enemy force has been repelled will the sun of peace shine," Boselli wrote. Furino's plates skillfully interpret the Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles in a warlike vein. The "Gloria" plate, the one of San Giusto in Trieste , and the Dante Monument in Trento are the album's political heart. An act of moral resistance that serves to unite the nation through the cult of Dante.
