Specialist Notes
The "Exact drawing of the sumptuous and pompous ball" is a famous engraving by Marc'Antonio Dal Re (1697–1766) that adorns the volume created to document the celebrations that took place in the Regio Ducal Theatre in Milan on the evening of 28 May 1747. The opera celebrated the marriage between Archduke Joseph of Austria and Isabella of Bourbon-Parma (although the Milanese celebrations continued for various dynastic occasions of the period). The engraving at the end of the volume shows the interior of the theatre (located where the Royal Palace now stands, before it was destroyed by fire in 1776 and replaced by La Scala) transformed into a vast ballroom. Dal Re, known for his perspective views of Milan and the "Ville di Delizia," uses a central perspective to emphasize the grandeur of the structure, the candlelight, and the crowd in gala attire. It is one of the most precise visual accounts of the Regio Ducal Teatro in the 18th century, highlighting the arrangement of the boxes and the use of the stage space for social events among the Milanese nobility.
