Information
A fine example of private writing from the late nineteenth century, by a refined reader and writer who reveals his soul in these pages. Perhaps it is Giovanni Messori of Modena, who signs one of the last texts (the bookplate on the inside cover is also his). It begins with a series of Petrarchan sonnets found among his grandfather's papers, poems dedicated to an unknown Maria. Then comes an Ode "To Solitude," which precedes an illustrated scientific text entitled "Degli Orologi Solari Verticali." This is followed by a theatrical act, "La Camera affittata," a piece performed during the 1874 Carnival in Modena at the Collegio San Carlo. Poetic texts alternate with descriptions of churches and tales of village festivals and fairs, all accounts gathered in the Modena area. A beautiful testimony from a traveler who loves his homeland.
Specialist Notes
The Modenese knight Giovanni Messori attended the S. Carlo College in Modena between 1859 and 1865. After leaving S. Carlo he enrolled at university and graduated in engineering. He took part in the Provincial Health Council at least as early as 1889 and was also active in Modena's cultural life.
