Specialist Notes
The atlas "Italia di Gio. Ant. Magini" (1642 edition), printed in Bologna by Nicolò Tebaldini, is the famous posthumous work of the Paduan cartographer and mathematician Giovanni Antonio Magini. Considered the first atlas entirely dedicated to the peninsula , it revolutionized the history of modern cartography. Magini managed to map Italy with unprecedented precision and visual coherence, also taking advantage of his extensive network of contacts with the powerful figures of the time (including Vincenzo Gonzaga). The work had an immense influence on European cartography. It was reprinted several times during the 17th century (1620, 1632, 1642), and its maps were imitated or directly integrated into well-known international atlases, such as those of Jodocus Hondius.
