The Model
The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia is a car sold under the Volkswagen brand between 1955 and 1974 and assembled by the Karmann body shop. At the beginning of the fifties, Volkswagen decided to add a sporty variant that exploited its entire mechanics to the best-selling Beetle, whose trade name was simply Volkswagen 1200. Heinrich Nordhoff (general manager of Volkswagen) and Wilhelm Karmann (owner of the homonymous body shop) started the project in 1951,without obtaining stylistically convincing results. At the 1953 Paris Motor Show, Ghia accidentally presented a prototype coupe based on Beetle. Karmann, on a visit to the show, was impressed and decided, in agreement with the Turin bodyshop, to present it to Nordhoff, who immediately approved the production. After a one-year development of three(Volkswagen, Karmann and Ghia), the new coupé was presented to the public in 1955, under the name of 1200Karmann-Ghia. The new and successful bodywork, bolted to the platform chassis, covered the mechanics, without the slightest variation, of the Beetle. Strong, reliable and well-built, it nevertheless had the limit of offering modest performance: the 1192 cc enginewith34hpwas enough to propel the car to a maximum speed of 115 km/h, withover25 seconds to reach 100 km/h. In 1957 the coupé was joined by the convertible version, equipped with the same mechanics. In August 1959 the oversized front headlights are raised by 12 cm, the rear lights have a new "banana"shape, the front air intakes become larger and change shape, the front bumpers are equipped with an upper tubular rostrum, the dashboard adopts an anti-reflective black upper band, the rear windows of the coupé can be opened. In August 1960 the engine was slightly boosted, the headlights became asymmetrical and the gearbox was fully synchronized. Like the beetle, the car was subjected to continuous updates, until July 1974, when production of both coupes and convertibles ceased.
The car
The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia cabriolet (defined Typ14 internally by the factory) with chassis no. 6133028 was produced in January 1964. It is believed that it was sold in Italy, where it was registered again with 1997 plates. The exterior color is L 560 Manila yellow combined with black hood and 79 black leather interior with “piping ” in a clear contrasting tone. It has been restored and is in perfect condition and original throughout, with ASI Targa Oro certification. With attention to every detail, many preserved as the "stickers" inside the hoods, the car features options such as the tonneau-cover; Blaupunkt radio with FM band; white wall tires; rims painted in the same color with optional chromed wheel covers. It is fitted with an “America type” bumper. It has been owned by the current owner since 1997.
