Supreme Command, November 4, 1918, 12 noon;
War Bulletin No. 1268
The war against Austria-Hungary, which the Italian Army, inferior in numbers and means, began on May 24, 1915, under the high leadership of His Majesty the King, Supreme Leader, and waged uninterrupted and bitterly for 41 months with unwavering faith and tenacious courage, has been won. The gigantic battle waged on October 24, in which fifty-one Italian divisions, three British, two French, one Czechoslovakian, and one American regiment took part against seventy-three Austro-Hungarian divisions, is over. The lightning-fast and daring advance of the XXIX Army Corps on Trento, barring the retreat of the enemy armies in Trentino, overwhelmed to the west by the troops of the Seventh Army and to the east by those of the I, VI, and IV, yesterday led to the total collapse of the enemy front. From the Brenta to the Torre, the irresistible momentum of the XII, VIII, and X armies, and the cavalry divisions, pushes the fleeing enemy ever further back. On the plain, HRH the Duke of Aosta advances rapidly at the head of his undefeated III Army, eager to return to the positions it had already victoriously conquered, which it had never lost. The Austro-Hungarian Army is annihilated: it has suffered very heavy losses in the fierce resistance of the first days, and in the pursuit it has lost enormous quantities of material of all kinds and almost all its warehouses and depots. It has so far left in our hands approximately three hundred thousand prisoners, along with entire general staffs and no fewer than five thousand cannons. The remnants of what was once one of the most powerful armies in the world are climbing up, in disorder and without hope, the valleys they had descended with proud confidence. - Armando Diaz
