Folding advertising brochure " The Conciliation between Italy and the Vatican – Film by the National Institute LUCE ", 1929

Rare illustrated fold-out brochure, produced by the National Institute LUCE (The Educational Cinematographic Union) for the distribution of the cinematographic documentary on the signing of the Lateran Pacts, the agreement
signed on 11 February 1929 between the Holy See and the Kingdom of Italy, which put an end to the "Roman Question" that had opened in 1870.
It measures approximately 240x170mm, in good condition.

The cover, in fascist Art Deco graphic style, is two-tone (bright yellow in the upper half, white in the lower half) and bears the two coats of arms of the contracting parties: in the top left the coat of arms of Rome (black eagle with three
red spheres on a white and gold shield), at the bottom right the Savoy shield (blue cross on a white field with a red border). The title stands out in constructivist characters: "THE CONCILIATION BETWEEN ITALY AND THE VATICAN –
FILM OF THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE LUCE" At the bottom right the signature of the graphic designer: " onor " [Onorato Umberto (1898 - 1967)]

The open interior reveals a tricolour graphic composition (yellow-orange in the centre, red and blue on the sides) with three photographs of the ceremony (signing of the Pacts, solemn Mass, scenes from the Vatican) and the portraits of: THE KING (Vittorio
Emanuele III, left). PIUS XI (Pope Achille Ratti, right), Benito Mussolini, and Cardinal Gasparri. The central text reads: "This is the only film of the event, shot by the Istituto Nazionale LUCE in agreement with the Vatican.

It illustrates the details of the signing ceremony, the solemn Mass in St. Peter's, the Blessing of the Holy Father, recalls the previous Blessings of Pius XI, and shows in an interesting summary the internal life of the Vatican, its artistic riches, the beauty of its gardens, and some episodes of the Pontiff's day."
The caption under "The King" reads: "A great Pontiff and a great King join hands, after eighty years of turbulent historical events."

The Lateran Pacts of 1929 (signed by Mussolini for Italy and by Cardinal Gasparri for the Holy See) created the Vatican City State and regulated relations between the Church and the Italian state. The documentary LUCE
It was the only film authorized to record the ceremony, an audiovisual document of primary historical importance.
