Information

360mm x 165mm diameter
Rare example of Imperial Clock , in the shape of a fasces in brass sheet with a musical carillon playing " Giovinezza "

This relic was offered for sale for fascist propaganda, and as can be read from the plaque on the base, " For the partial benefit of the WAR ORPHANS of the YOUTH WORKER COLONIES, " part of the proceeds was used to support the youth colonies. The structure, entirely made of chromed brass sheet, in the shape of a fasces with an axe and lion's head on the sides, contains a music box inside the fasces, operated by a spring-loaded mechanism in perfect working order; on the front is a mechanical clock and a frame that could serve as a photo frame for the deceased fascist soldier parent. Instead of a photo, the base featured this cellograph image, depicting Italy (the woman with a turreted crown) wearing the tricolor flag, holding the young fascist in her arms, protected by an eagle with open wings, and a fasces in the upper left. The image was generally in black and white, while this one is in color, making the example in the catalog even rarer.

The piece measures approximately 360mm in height and 165mm in diameter at the base. The music box has been tested and is in perfect working order at the time of its auction (a video is available upon request).
In excellent general condition.

The song "Giovinezza" was composed by Giovanni Blanc in 1909 as a goliardic anthem for university students, and was later adapted and used by fascism as a triumphal anthem starting in 1925.
