A rare circular bronze plaque, created by the Genoese sculptor Giovanni Prini around 1926 for the Sicilian Navigation Company during the Fascist period, is the inspiration for the medal with the same design that was to be awarded to all crew members in memory of their exploits in the First World War. The medal was struck by the Royal Mint.
The beautiful high-relief sculpture depicts the Duce 's face in profile, half-hidden by his left hand holding a ship's rudder, and his right hand holding a gladius, a weapon from ancient Roman times revisited in the imaginary equipment of fascist soldiers. On the edge of the rudder is the motto NAVIGARE NECESSE.
The plaque was exhibited in 1926 at the First Exhibition of Maritime Art in Rome, then in 1928 during the XCIV Exhibition of the Society of Amateurs and Cultivators of Fine Arts, and other events.
Signed lower right PRINI, it measures approximately 200mm in diameter, and is in excellent condition
It is accompanied by certification from the PRINI Archive
