The Ode to the Serbian Nation was composed by d'Annunzio in 1915 in solidarity with Serbia, devastated by the Austro-German invasion. Printed at his own expense in Venice, it was intended for a select few recipients, such as the present dedicatee, His Excellency Vice Admiral Paolo Thaon di Revel (Turin 1859 – Rome 1948), the future "Duke of the Sea." December 1915 marked the first months of intense military collaboration between d'Annunzio and the Italian Navy in the Adriatic, from their base in Venice.
