Zico's arrival in Udine in the summer of 1983 probably remains the most sensational and romantic twist in the history of the Italian football transfer market. "Galinho," then considered the best player on the planet alongside Maradona, chose the Friuli province, challenging the major cities of world football and sparking unprecedented popular enthusiasm, epitomized by the famous street chant "Zico or Austria." What on paper seemed like an impossible marriage transformed into a dazzling reality, capable of bringing a traditionally mid-table team to the forefront of the league and fueling the dreams of an entire nation, who saw in the Brazilian champion a social as well as sporting redemption.
