The painting derives from a prototype by Parmigianino preserved in Frankfurt (Stadel Kunstinstitut, inv. 1496), of which two other ancient replicas are known, one in the Galleria Nazionale in Parma and one in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
