Finarte-Pitti, “Furnishings of Villa Diana in Fiesole”, 27 November 1991, lot 306; private collection.
Under UV light, traces of an abraded signature are visible on the base; the few still-legible letters could be associated with Francesco Lamarra, an engraver and painter who was a pupil of Solimena.
The central figures of the Madonna and Child find close parallels with those in the paintings by Francesco Solimena now preserved at Schloss Rohrau and in the collections of the Banca Popolare di Novara (N. Spinosa, Francesco Solimena (1657–1747) e le Arti a Napoli, Rome 2018, cat. 222 and 222.1, p. 482).
Unlike the two works mentioned above, whose compositions are limited to the sole figures of the Mother and Child and were therefore probably for private devotion, this painting is a true altarpiece: a large-scale work populated by numerous figures, creating a composition of great complexity and visual impact.
