Fellow of the Royal Scottish Academy from 1871 and Fellow of the Royal Watercolor Society from 1878, Lockhart made his first trip to Spain in 1867. He would return several times over the years, drawing subjects for numerous historical and genre paintings, among the most appreciated of his production.
