Literature

See R. Mammucari, Roman countryside , Città di Castello 2002, p. 25 (ill.).
For a comparison with the present painting, see the etching Ox-cart. Campagna created by Charles Coleman in 1850 as part of the series A Series of Subjects Peculiar to the Campagna of Rome and Pontine Marshes Designed from Nature and dated 1848–1850. In this etching, the figure of the dog in the foreground is missing from the present painting, and the position of the seagulls in flight is different. Otherwise, the composition is substantially the same, with the figure of the cart driver dominating the scene along with the two formidable oxen in the foreground.
