Information
height total circa 51,5 cm.
Sturdy hemispherical iron skull in good condition, with signs of time and exfoliations. The surface features extensive remains of an ancient elaborate gold-inlaid decoration that once covered the entire outer margin; traces of racemes and floral frames are still partially visible. At the top there is a faceted plume-holder shaped as truncated cone with a knot and base carved with petals. Two front plume-holders, also faceted. In the centre the nosepiece with festooned cartridge extractors at the ends (probably a small button is missing), still provided with the loop featuring the supporting strap to keep it raised. (When retracted, the nosepiece must be inclined, otherwise it would clash with the central plume-holder). Beautiful mail neck-defense with simple rings without closing, very small and alternating with some brass ones shaped as a diamond pattern. The lower border is festooned. Beautiful earlier dark brown-brown patina. Inside, a probably later lining complete with chin straps.
