Information

Marco Van Basten's autographed card, wearing a Netherlands jersey, published by Panini as part of the 2021 Mosaic Scripts series. Numbered out of 10, the item up for auction is number 1. The striker, considered one of the greatest of all time despite a career cut short, left an indelible mark on the Oranje's history. The highlight of Van Basten's career with the Dutch national team was undoubtedly the 1988 European Championship in West Germany. In a memorable edition, the Netherlands, led on the pitch by the ace trio of Van Basten, Ruud Gullit, and Frank Rijkaard, embarked on a remarkable run that culminated in the title. Van Basten was the true star of that tournament. After a difficult start with a defeat to the Soviet Union, the AC Milan striker exploded, scoring decisive goals against England (a hat-trick) and West Germany in the semifinals. But the goal that cemented Van Basten's place in the collective imagination and in football history came in the final against the Soviet Union. With the score at 1-0 to the Netherlands (goal by Gullit), Van Basten scored an incredible goal: a near-impossible volley from a tight angle on the right that flew past Rinat Dasayev. A feat of pure ballistics and coordination that is still considered one of the greatest goals in European Championship history. The Netherlands won the final 2-0, and Van Basten finished as the tournament's top scorer with five goals, earning himself a place in Dutch and world football legend.
