Information
Gold, 0.84 gr. - Diam. 14.00 mm.
Obverse: Saint Mark standing left, blessing the kneeling Doge, right, holding the banner; Reverse: The Redeemer, standing frontally, with the Gospel, blessing within an elliptical halo dotted with stars.
Brunetti 930/1.
q.SPL.
Among the most rare coins minted by the Most Serene Republic of Venice, the quarter zecchino by Nicolò Donà stands out, unanimously classified by the major numismatic repertoires as the rarest of all. According to Brunetti's work, Luigi Cigoi had a counterfeit made during the 19th century with the intention of deceiving wealthy collectors. As is often the case with coins attributed to him, the fake features subtle but significant stylistic discrepancies from the original. In this specific case, it is recognizable by the obverse depiction of the figures of Saint Mark and the Doge, almost devoid of design and relief, while the reverse die was also used for the forgeries by Sebastiano Venier and Marco Foscarini.
