Specialist Notes

Stefano Borgia (1731-1801), an eclectic Roman patron of the arts, was a prominent figure in European cultural life in the second half of the eighteenth century. He was prefect of the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith and the Congregation of the Index (in this capacity, he permitted the reading of prohibited books), as well as responsible for papal foreign policy during the Napoleonic era. In this brilliant essay, the author defends papal claims in the numerous, centuries-old territorial disputes between the papacy and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. The second part contains the appendix with documentary sources.
