Beautiful signed autograph letter on 4 pages, 203 x 134 mm., dated Borgosesia 21 September 1923.


Specialist Notes

THE ASCENT OF THE GRAND JORASSES BY A NEW ROUTE

The letter mentions a rapidly progressing publishing project, both in terms of text and photographs. But the heart of the letter is the announcement of a new mountaineering venture. "(...) To complete the series of our explorations in the Mont Blanc chain, for some years we had been planning and studying in depth the conquest of the Grand Jorasses by a completely new route, which has repelled many mysterious attempts by mountaineers, especially English and Austrian. Our studies proceeded in good agreement with our usual worthy companion Francesco Ravelli. The new route was for the South-South-East Ridge and Face (Pra Sec-Tronchey) and the attempt was fixed for this campaign in 1923. (...) Having seen this, it was understood with Ravelli that he would attempt the enterprise himself, in the name of the "old roped party", if he saw it in danger of slipping into other hands (...) Without wasting time and according to our agreements, he decided to attack on days 25-26-27, with two bivouacs, one on the ascent and one on the descent. The enterprise was successful without guides, by the new route designed, led by his colleague Rivetti and a porter from Courmayeur. (...)"
