Specialist Notes
VERY ELEGANT ELZEVIRIAN EDITION OF GUARINI'S MASTERPIECE.
An ingenious and bold experiment, Guarini's pastoral tragicomedy aspires to be a synthesis and innovative transcendence of the genres present on the sixteenth-century theatrical scene. Heir, in terms of themes and typologies, to a now consolidated and illustrious Ferrarese pastoral tradition, animated by a spirit of competition with Tasso's Aminta —which, however, does not exhaust the scope of Guarini's challenge—Il Pastor Fido, a text of deceptive lightness, displays a combinatorial exercise practiced at all levels.
