In-4°; 4 volumes; contemporary half-leather binding, raised spines with titles and rich gold decorations, marbled covers and endpapers; 50 aquatint plates (each protected by vellum), drawn by: Hayez, Biasoli, Palagi, Sanquirico, Monticelli, Sabatelli, Gallina, Landriani, Raineri, Bramati and Migliara and three tables folded out of the text (one with the "Genealogy of the heroes of the romances based on the origins of the Franks and the history of Charlemagne, his paladins and their descendants"; a "Genealogical table of the heroes of the romances based on the origins and deeds of the Bretons" and a "Genealogical table of the heroes of the romances based on the origins and deeds of the Gauls"). Wide-margined copy, blank pages, untrimmed at the lateral and lower edges; printed on laid paper; in near-excellent condition. Collector's item.

Specialist Notes

An interesting and comprehensive study of Italian romances of chivalry, in a rare edition complete with the fourth volume (entitled: "Bibliography of Italian romances and poems of chivalry"), embellished with beautiful plates depicting the lives of knights, tournaments, etc. Giulio Ferrario (1767-1847), Milanese printer and publisher, founder of the "Società tipografica de' Classici italiani", illustrator, historian, and scholar of costume history. Provenance: Ownership information: label glued to the front cover (with the initials WLG printed).
