Specialist Notes
Mauro d'Arcano was among the protagonists of the so-called Accademia dei Vignaiuoli, founded in Rome in the early 1530s around the Mantuan gentleman Uberto Strozzi. This group of poets included Francesco Berni, Francesco Maria Molza, Giovanni Della Casa, Lelio Capilupi, and others.
Mauro competed with Berni for primacy in burlesque poetry, constructing his chapters in simple and often decidedly obscene language: compared to Berni's chapters, his compositions show a tendency towards prolixity, digressions and personal annotations. Mauro's 21 burlesque chapters in terza rima remain, probably composed between the early 1530s and 1535. His production includes Priapic verses ( Chapters of the Bean, Chapter in Praise of Priapus ), paradoxical chapters ( On Lies, On Famine ) and epistolary chapters (On the Journey to Rome to the Duke of Malfi, To Messer Ruberto Strozzi). In 1538, the same Navòs published a new edition (the one offered here), Tutte le terza rime del Mauro , which attributed 22 compositions to M.
