Specialist Notes

Interesting historical document regarding the transfer of ownership of various farms and lands located in Martignano (Trento) from the Rovereti family of Freiberg ('Roveretti de Fraiberg' in the deed) to the Altemburger family, tobacco merchants in Trento.
The reason for the sale was the death on August 14, 1710, of Gio. Giuseppe Bonaventura Rovereti, who left his wife and eight children "debts amounting to the sum of the Ragnesi five thousand, five hundred, eighty-three." The interest accrued on these debts prompted the Rovereti family to "sell a farm with stately and rural houses and arable land, vineyards, and meadows located in this district of Trento, called Martignano and Piazina." A detailed list of the properties follows. The transfer was made to Pietro and Giuseppe, the Altemburger brothers. A detailed list of the debts left by Bonaventura Rovereti follows, totaling 5,583 Ragnesi [Rhenish florins, the currency used in that area since the 14th century], and the related payment installments by the Altemburgers—four installments to be precise. At the end of the sale, the cost of the farm will amount to 20,843 Ragnesi. After deducting the 5,583 Ragnesi in previous debts, the Rovereti family will be left with 15,260 Ragnesi to distribute among the various heirs for their various needs. The deed of sale is signed by notary Antonio Ceschini at the bottom of the document in question, on the verso of c. 13, with a regular notary stamp/seal. Below is a list of the "Assignments and Releases" relating to the deceased's many creditors, which will be paid by the new purchasers (debt releases). A valuable legal document containing interesting details on the management of properties, the division of debts and revenues, and general administration in Trentino in the 18th century.
