Specialist Notes

Rare loose leaflet relating to the rates to be applied for the various activities connected to the administration of Justice. The compensations foreseen for the activity of the executioner and of those who have to carry out the various sentences are worrying: "For cutting off the head, including all expenses, 8 lire; For hanging and quartering each person, including the rope and other, 35 lire; For sticking the four quarters and the head on the gallows, 16 lire; When he leads someone on a donkey, either whipping them or not whipping them, including all expenses for the rope and other, 5 lire; To the Corporal of Torment in the case of having people hanged; For having the gallows erected in the city of Florence and brought back to the Palazzo del Bargello, in all 56 lire; To the Master of Justice, when he puts someone in the pillory, 4 lire; When he whips someone in the courtyard or at the Market Column, 4 lire. (...)" A compensation was also foreseen for the "Families who assist in this public function".
We are at the end of the seventeenth century and the administration of Justice was a public event, a warning for those who wanted to commit crimes. The price differences between the various forms of capital execution are curious, where it is discovered that cutting off the head costs three times less than hanging. Another 80 years will have to pass before Beccaria illustrates the uselessness of the death penalty (1764).
