Claude-Charles de Peyssonel, scrittore e diplomatico francese (1727 - 1790) visse circa 35 anni della sua vita nell'Impero Ottomano, e le sue opere sono ricche di osservazioni e riflessioni che risalgono a quel periodo. Il suo raro trattato "Sur le commerce de la Mer Noir" contiene informazioni dettagliate sulla geografia, il clima, e la storia della Crimea e descrive in dettaglio i prodotti e il commercio tra questa zona del Mar Nero e la Russia.
