A work of extreme erudition, a complete and rich treatise on the Capuan amphitheatre. Through the testimonies of ancient writers, Mazzocchi reconstructs the original form of the building, describes the baths and gymnasiums and the sports activities that took place there, not only gladiatorial but also hunting, equestrian and gymnastic. Each topic is treated with precise references to inscriptions and quotations, comparing what was happening outside Campania. The largest part, illustrated in the engravings, is dedicated to the description of the amphitheatre, describing the state of the ruins, the reconstruction hypothesis made by Cesare Costa, a scholar of Campanian antiquities and the integration of the missing part of the inscriptions found mutilated. Second revised and expanded edition.
