According to Runciman, Cambini consulted survivors of the siege of Constantinople to obtain information for this important work, which was followed in 1541 by a similar work by Paolo Giovio; both works were often published together in later editions. Göllner writes that the work is of particular interest for its description of events at the turn of the 16th century and for the interesting details it provides on Ottoman and Venetian connections. It is an important work on the Turkish Empire up to 1517. The description of the siege of Constantinople is apparently based on first-hand accounts of survivors [Atabey]. Cambini belonged to a group of 16th-century Italian historians, which also included Paolo Giovio and Giovanni Menavino.
Atabey 185: «Cambini consulted survivors of the siege of Constantinople in composing this important work, which provided account of the Turks up to 1517, the date of the Ottoman conquest of Egypt».
