Bergamo, Pietro Lancellotti, 1749. In 4th. 2 parts in 1 volume. Portrait of the author in the front door engraved by F. Zucchi, xylographic publishing mark on the title pages, friezes engraved in wood, slight blooms and some reddening, last slightly burnished papers, coeval binding in full rigid parchment, handwritten title on the spine, slight defects. Ex libris on the counterplate and on the back of the title page.

The literary masterpiece of the Jesuit historian Giovanni Pietro Maffei (Bergamo 1533-Tivoli 1603) met with considerable success among contemporaries in the wake of the considerable interest aroused around Western missions in the ancient Asian world
