Specialist Notes
Construction work on the road began in 1848 on the initiative of the Austrian government of the Lombard-Veneto Kingdom in order to avoid the Stelvio pass, which was impracticable for many months a year. The road was designed by Giovanni Donegani, son of Carlo Donegani, designer of the streets of the Stelvio (SS 38) and Spluga (SS 36) passes, based on the surveys made by his father. The road was finished by the Austrians on the eve of the Second War of Independence.
