Cologne, Pietro Martello, 1721. In 2nd. Front door with Medici coat of arms engraved by Andreas Matthaus Wolfgang, portrait of the author engraved by Johann Andreas Pfeffel, frontispiece printed in red and black, a table with the family tree of the Medici family, initial letters and woodcut friezes, bearded cards, browning, small woodworm holes in the lower white margin of a few cards, coeval hardcover binding, smooth spine with manuscript author and title, dust deposits. Ex libris nobiliare on the counterplate.
Specialist Notes
First edition, first edition, marked by the story of the episode of Pier Luigi Farnese's villainy against the bishop of Fano on p. 639 and actually printed in Augusta by Paolo Kuhzio (see Parenti, Dictionary of false, invented or supposed places of printing, 56), and edited by Francesco Settimanni. Varchi wrote this important history of Florence over the span of twenty years, commissioned by Cosimo I.
