Capolavoro di tecnologia meccanica e ottica, il teoodolite o tacheometro era uno strumento di alta precisione utilizzato per i rilievi geodetici, topografici e dagli idrografi per le misurazioni a terra. La ditta Filotecnica (poi Filotecnica Salmoiraghi), fondata a metà del sec. XIX a Milano sotto la direzione di Ignazio Porro, è stata una delle più prestigiose aziende italiane di produzione di strumenti topografici.
