Venice: Hertz, 1721. In 2nd. Frontispiece with large intaglio vignette, text on two columns, complete with 25 plates out of text, each divided into 16 compartments bearing illustrations of plants or animals, marginal blooms, light water gorge, woodworm work in the inner margin of the first issues up to A4 , small traces of wax on the verso of D5 and D6, restored tear on plate XVII, last slightly loosened issue, reinforcements on the first and last white paper, coeval binding in rigid parchment, author and title manuscripts on the spine with 5 nerves with a small paper piece , partially detached front plate and detached rear plate, back defects, slight halos. Ex libris manuscript on the guard card.
Specialist Notes
Lemery (1645 - 1715) is considered to be the reformer of pharmaceutical chemistry and this work is an alphabetical dictionary of simple drugs, which, for ease of reference, were also listed, at the end, in a double index: "Table of Latin names" and " Table of the infirmities to which the simple drugs that are described give benefit ". Abortion, Apoplexy, Ardori di corpo Ardori di Venere ... up to Uvula, infirm viscera, weak sight, Ulcers, Moods, Volatiles, Vomiting: for the "Ardori di Venere" the use of Cannabis was recommended major and cannabis sterilis, erratica, paludosa, sylvestris); for the pains and the cleaning of the teeth, among numerous remedies, the Dentellaria was proposed, which also had the quality of "healing the scratches that are made near the butt while riding ..."
