Specialist Notes

The volume is a valuable historical-geographical atlas: the scholar Graesse cites various editions published during the 1920s, and attributes its true authorship to Count Aug. Emm. Dieudonné Mar. Jos. de Las Cases. He was born in Las Cases (in Haute Garonne) in 1766 and died in Passy-sur-Seine in 1842: he was an official and remained loyal to Napoleon, so much so that he wanted to follow the emperor in the exile of Saint Helena; his most important writing is, in fact, Le Mémorial de Saint-Hélène on the last years of the famous strategist.
