Specialist Notes

Important letter sent to Napoleon & nbsp; from l General Sextius Miollis, in charge of taking possession of Rome and arresting the Pope.
General Miollis as President of the Council informs Napoleon that" I received on 5 [June] in Verona the decrees of Your Majesty of 17 May relating to the Roman states; today in the morning the extraordinary consultation put them in execution: I have the honor of bringing his first acts to the foot of your throne: the taking of possession was done with solemnity; everything is calm and peaceful, despite the fact that the pope with some of his adherents is stubborn in his system. The same day the papal banners are lowered everywhere in Rome and replaced with the French tricolor. Pius VII rejects the decree and launches excommunication. On 6 July the Pope is arrested and deported.
